When Squirrels Get Inside Your Home Or Business
People often think squirrels are cute with their erratic behavior and funny mannerisms, that is until they end up inside of your home or business. More often than not, when squirrels enter a structure, they are simply displaying natural behaviors, which are to seek food and shelter.
Common Problem Areas
When you hear or see squirrel activity inside of your chimney, you can bet the squirrel(s) has become trapped. Once squirrels get into or fall into a chimney, they find it difficult to climb back out. If they are trapped, squirrels may try to exit through fireplace openings on the inside of a structure or basement ducts. Never try to “smoke” a squirrel out of a chimney. Since most squirrels that end up in chimneys are trapped, smoking them out will not work and may kill the animal, still leaving you with problems.
A telltale sign of having squirrels in your attic is the noises they make. If you are hearing noises in the morning and again in the early evening, there is a good chance squirrels are to blame. Squirrels are lightweight and very quick movers, so the sounds are that of swift scurrying or sprints, typically coming from the attic and edges of a structure's roof. The majority of the noise is made when the squirrels are entering and exiting the attic. The noises often increase during the months of September and March when baby squirrels start to become more active and mobile.
Common Entry Points
Squirrels can gain entry into a structure through a number of different ways. Whether they enter by chewing a hole or seeking opportunity through damaged material on a structure, squirrels can be quite opportunistic.
Most Common Squirrels Found In New England
Northern Gray Squirrels
Eastern Gray Squirrels begin to breed in January and February, and are highly active in March as they seek out shelter in chimneys and vents for raising their young. They are also active in October when they have second litters and seek out shelter for the winter.
Like Gray Squirrels, Red Squirrels cause similar problems when they begin breeding in January and February. Red Squirrels are highly active in March as they seek out shelter in chimneys and vents for raising their young. They are also active in October when they have second litters and seek out shelter for the winter.
Northern Flying Squirrels
Northern Flying Squirrels peak around September as they begin looking for a winter home, typically in an attic space. During January and February, they tend to become a nuisance as they create a lot of noise taking up mating in attics. Their young are born in March and April, and squirrels will try and raise them in the attic space throughout the summer.
